Imagine me open-mouthed and lost for words! Quite difficult? That’s because it doesn’t happen often.
However, that was exactly what happened at the end of the most amazing pilot workshop run by my youngest child (17) to launch their new business, Scàthach
Hands down, it was the most effective and informative session about neurodivergence I have ever attended (and I have attended quite a few).
If you are a professional who has the good fortune to work with neurodivergent individuals, this training is a must!
In the hope that you will be afforded the opportunity to take part in this, I am not going to include any spoilers here. However, it is a fully immersive session and effectively has every professional in the room understand exactly what it would feel like to be given a task to do at school, work, or anywhere in life, without being equipped to understand the instructions; the every day experience of neurodivergent people.
It is well-thought out, simple in its delivery and makes every person in the room think, long and hard, about what life is like for so many in our society. The presentation of it is confident, positive, and lets the activity tell the story. It does not tell of personal experiences (though folk would listen intently I’m sure), it does not tell us how difficult life can be, or the numerous negative situations encountered. It simply lets you find out for yourself.
It is interactive and allows participants to fully appreciate the neurodivergent experience by actually 'feeling it'! I wish I could describe it in detail but I just want you to get the full impact yourself. After the first part of the session, you will confidently be told exactly how you have done. You will be part of a large group of professional adults, those with an interest in the topic and all of whom probably think they know what the training would be about, yet the room will be still; everyone feeling exactly how it must be for neurodivergent pupils in our schools, students in our tertiary education, and colleagues in our workplaces. You will
feel it. Truly
feel it.
Contrast will be masterfully created in the second part of the session, developing a sense of relief throughout the room. Once again, you will
feel it. Really
feel the anxiety fall away and the confidence grow.
Of course I am immensely proud of my youngest in developing this unique and groundbreaking workshop, but more than anything, like them, I want to see the change it can make for everyone involved in society. Those working with neurodivergent individuals will be more equipped to do so and those who are neurodivergent will be given the opportunity to thrive in nurturing environments.
The next steps? We need to take this far and wide and let professionals around the country, by their participation, feel the experiences of so many.
Let’s come together for change and make our society a truly inclusive place!
